Summer Internship Program and Volunteer Orientations

TWRC has summer internship positions open and is currently recruiting students with a professional interest in biology, ecology, veterinary medicine, or wildlife management. Interns will become a part of a team of staff members, volunteers, and other interns participating in the daily activities at the hospital that is open seven days a week in the Research Triangle in North Carolina. Interns must be at least 18 years old.

Internship responsibilities:

• Carry out daily husbandry for patients within clinic, particularly nestling and fledgling songbirds
• Care for other typical patients such as box turtles and various water turtles
• Assist senior TWRC staff with mammal care (raptor care will be only under supervision by senior staff)
• Care for patients in off-site, outdoor pre-release cages
• Perform routine support tasks, including cage cleaning, dishwashing, hospital maintenance and food preparation
• Assist with physical examinations of new patients and monitor patient progress toward release
• Observe medical and surgical procedures
• Transport injured wildlife (including raptors, large waterfowl and wading birds).
• Perform initial intakes and assessment of sick, injured and orphaned wildlife.
• Train new volunteers as needed
• Answer public phone calls made to the wildlife hospital:
  • Learn to assess an animal's health status over the phone
  • Learn NC laws and regulations about wildlife issues
  • Learn how to answer questions about wildlife problems pertaining to the public

Internships consist of at least a 40-hour work week and require a minimum three-month commitment. These are non-paid positions and interns must provide their own transportation; housing may be provided on an as-needed basis. Internships are available from April to September. We understand that college and university calendars vary; therefore, specific start and end dates can be arranged.

Volunteer Orientations

As spring baby bird season approaches, we will need dedicated nursery help to feed the hundreds of baby songbirds that will arrive. Be a part of preserving our native wildlife by volunteering your time. Volunteer orientations will take place on March 28 from 1 to 3 pm at Parkwood United Methodist Church, Durham, NC. To sign up, please contact volcoord@trianglewildlife.org. If you cannot participate on March 28, please call the clinic to find another time for training.
